Which Squad to try after the CS13985 update | Tape to Tape
ReviewedTape to Tape: CS13985 made 16-Bit, Modern and Violence available by default. You no longer need an older unlock route for those three. Choose 16-Bit for a retro hockey feel, Modern for offsides and manual pokechecks, or Violence for a style built around explosions and heavy bodychecks.

Compare the three newly default choices
This comparison uses the developer's patch descriptions. It is a way to select the rules you want to try, not a ranking of the strongest Squad.
| Squad | What the patch highlights | Choose it when… |
|---|---|---|
| 16-Bit | Blue ice, speed bursts, retro sounds and old-school gameplay | You want the game's classic-hockey variation. |
| Modern | Offsides and manual pokechecks | You want to play with those additional rules and manual defensive actions. |
| Violence | Explosions and forceful bodychecks | You want to explore a more physical style. |
Check the Squad before borrowing a tactic
The 1.0 campaign has Squads with different rules, roster arrangements, advantages and restrictions. A tactic described without a Squad name should not be presented as a universal instruction.
This matters for the center-to-right-wing-to-center scoring example. Its author identified Pro difficulty but did not identify the Squad. Modern includes offsides, so do not assume the example settles whether every pass or player position is legal in a Modern run.
Avoid obsolete unlock work
The developers said players previously began with only three basic Squads and were unlocking additional choices too slowly. CS13985 added the three choices above to the default selection and adjusted some other unlock conditions.
There are still thirteen Squads to unlock according to these notes. The announcement does not enumerate every revised condition, so an older challenge list should not be treated as a complete current checklist.
- Choose one of the three newly default Squads according to the style you want to practice.
- Use that Squad's rules when applying a passing or defensive guide.
- For any other locked Squad, use the requirement displayed by your current game rather than assuming a pre-patch checklist is current.
If a supposedly default Squad is still locked
First compare the version you are playing with CS13985. This guide describes the official patch change; it is not a verified repair for a save that still displays a lock after updating.
Do not delete your save or edit unlock flags on the strength of this article. The available sources do not establish that either action is necessary or fixes this particular situation.
Check the result
You can choose a newly default Squad by its documented rules and avoid spending a run on an outdated unlock target for 16-Bit, Modern or Violence.
